Greetings Ron F—–r,
My name is Matt Kordelski. I have been working with Paul B—- on making some YouTube videos to promote his book(s).
He said you wanted to talk to me about starting your own YouTube channel.
My first question:
A) Did you want to hire me to create and run your YouTube channel?
Or….
B) Just ask me how to do it?
For now I shall assume its B.
Starting a new YouTube is very simple. Turning it into a viral hit and monetizing it is far more complex.
Step 1, Sign up for a NEW Gmail account. Even if you already have a GMail account, I wouldn’t use that one.
I strongly suggest you have make a new gmail account that is just for your YouTube account. For a variety of reasons ( if someone can somehow hack into your YouTube channel and or its corresponding Gmail account, they wont get that much personal information of yours).
I would suggest you get a new email that correlates to what your YouTube channel is about..:
“ronfournierspeaks” ,
“ronfournierbusiness” ,
“ronfournierbooks” ,
“ronfournierthoughts” ,
“ronfournieradvice” or something like that…
Once you have created a new gmail account, go to YouTube and it will ask you to sign in.
In the upper right corner of the page, you can sign in to YouTube.
Sign in with you new gmail account’s username and sign in password.
THEN…….
Click on the UPLOAD button and find whatever video you want to upload and select it for upload.

Ironically, one of the most popular topics on YouTube is
“how to start a YouTube channel”
and/or
“how to make a lot of money by monetizing your YouTube videos”
here is one of many:

How to MAKE your videos?
Can I assume you want to start some kind of ongoing talk show?
(when I say “talk show” I don’t necessarily mean a two person Johnny Carson style talk show, I use the term “talk show” to describe a show of one person talking about a particular topic)
The simplest way to make a show is simply use the built in webcam on your computer. I would suggest you buy a simple microphone to make your videos sound better.
This YouTube show I work on is just that, a series of ZOOM calls the host records on his home PC and then he send me the video file over google drive. I add the show Opening and closing and sometimes I add documentary footage/graphics over the talking to make it more interesting to watch.

As in all things, there are a variety of accessories you can buy to make your videos look and sound better.
Sitting at your desk and talking into your webcam is perfectly acceptable for a basic YouTube talk show. During the COVID lockdown, almost every TV interview or YouTube show was done this way.
I googled your name and found your substack videos. However you are making THOSE videos, just save them to the videos folder on your PC and then upload them to YouTube.
The next step up would be to put your smart phone on top of a simple plastic tripod:
and connect a basic smartphone microphone.
Why use your phone if you already have a built in webcam?
Most webcams / zoom calls are recorded in a 1280 by 720 pixels format, but most smart phones can shoot in 3840 by 2160 4K video. YouTubes search algorythym will recommend 4K videos before 1280 by 720 videos.
As you can imagine, you can go nuts buying all kinds of elaborate ( and expensive) equipment. That’s a personal decision you need to make about how important video quality is worth to you versus the cost.
This youtube show was recorded as a 1280 by 720 zoom call. I digitally scaled it up to 3840 by 2460. You will note that this video has over a thousand views BUT it clearly has been stretched out:

For episode 17 of the same series, I kept it 1280 by 720.
It looks less stretched BUT it only has 390 views. YouTube pushed the 4K episode higher up in its algorothm. Its a toss up as to what is more important to you.
This guy’s videos have gotten enormous amounts of views. and I’m pretty sure he is just holding his iphone on a selfie stick:

This early episode (10 years ago) of YouTube show by an ex-scientologist started of just using his webcam and built in microphone:

He eventually added a 4K camera and professional microphone, and there is a very noticeable difference in quality:
