I just watched the 2003 movie “GOTHIKA.” I can’t tell you why I hadn’t seen it before.

It’s pretty good. No masterpiece but its pretty good. It kept me interested until the end. Great moody atmospheric lighting through out. The interiors of the mental hospital have a kind of “gothic” look so is that where the title “Gothika” comes from but the movie never says.

Gorgeous actresses Halle Berry and Penelope Cruz play against type and spend most of the movie looking dirty and beat up. Berry should have got an Oscar nomination for this.

BUT! I have questions about the ending….

(SPOILERS)

In the end we see that Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) really DID kill her husband, but a ghost had invaded her body and made her do it. She didn’t do it willingly nor did she remember it.

It turns out her husband was a serial killer and deserved to die. BUT! She really did kill someone, and no court is going to accept that “a ghost made me do it” defense are they?

Then she shoots and kills a police officer who also deserved it, but there is no proof of his crimes. Even if she could prove that he “deserved it” she did kill a second person, a cop no less.

That “devil tattoo” on the cops back doesn’t really prove anything.

Mirandas colleague Pete (Robert Downey Jr) hearing the cop confess to being a serial killer isn’t really proof is it?

She is clearly guilty of killing two people AND guilty of attacking guards in her also presumably illegal escape from the jail/mental hospital.

But in the last scene she and another mental patient are seen to be free- walking the streets.

Why were either women released? We the movie audience know that both of them weren’t crazy and that the ghosts they claimed to see were real. But no psychiatrist/judge is going to believe that and release them- would they?
